It’s tough to beat the feeling you get while building a new R/C kit. “Ready to Run” vehicles have all but taken over our hobby in the last 10+ years. And while it’s great for newcomers to be up and running in no time flat. There is something about building a kit from scratch that is extremely satisfying. Everything from popping the tires onto the wheels to seeing the chassis come together. Each step has its own little reward when you are finished. Let alone you know the vehicle inside and out when the kit is completed since you installed every part yourself. Feeling a little nostalgic we decided we wanted to build a couple kits over the next few months. We created this blog page for these builds, and future R/C adventures we have floating around in our heads. Follow along as we document this Axial SCX10 II build step by step until complete.

 

First thing we like to do is open the box so we can find the manual. Take a few minutes to sit down and familiarize yourself with each step. Pay attention to the parts needed for each step. We will read through it a few times before we actually sit down to start building.

Check through each step for any small detail that may get overlooked during the build up.

Next we are always drawn to the wheels and tires, especially when they are scale! Axial did a great job with the new BFGoodrich All Terrain tires, great details and sticky as can be.

Time to get our hands greasy and start step 1! Grab the parts you need to complete the first step. One thing we really like about the updated SCX10II is the new ring and pinion gears. The Hi-Pinion gears move the pinion gear up above center line of the ring gear, as opposed to being on center line of the ring gear. This moves the driveshafts up out of harms way and improves driveline angles. It also increases the strength of the gears as multiple teeth are engaged at all times.

Place the steel lockers into position on the ring gears. Add a dab of thread lock to each screw and secure the lockers into place. Bearings go on next and you’re done.

Now grab the plastic axle housings and install the bearings onto the pinion shaft. The larger bearing in placed closest to the pinion gear.

Press the smaller bearing into the backside of the housing and insert the pinion gear into place.

Flip the housing around and install the ring gear assembly.

Add a little grease.

Install the differential covers and secure them with the supplied M3 screws.

Locate the plastic knuckles, C-hubs and lockouts for the next step. Slide the C-hubs into place on the front axle. Note direction of the C-hubs during this step. There are mating marks on the ends of the axle housings and on the C-hub’s, ensure they are lined up properly.

Install the supplied bearings for the knuckles.

Then, slide the front universal axles into the knuckles.

Slide the ends of the axle shafts into the housing and install the kingpin screws.

Slide your bearings into place on the rear axle shafts and insert them into the rear housing.

Install the rear axle lockouts with the supplied M3 screws. Make sure the tabs for the lockouts are facing the back of the housing.

Last step is installing the plastic link mounts onto the housings.

That covers building up the SCX10II axles. Next step is moving on to the suspension and steering links. Building kits is always fun and we are excited to keep moving forward with this build. These axles seem to be a huge improvement over the original SCX10 axles in every way. We are expecting the same from the rest of this kit as we move forward.
